Stress and reproductive failure: an evolutionary approach with applications to premature labor
Article Abstract:
Stress may lead to reproductive failure because the environmental conditions are not optimal for the birth and care of a baby. More than half of all human embryos spontaneously abort, a rate similar to that seen in animals. Premature birth may also be a form of reproductive failure, and most premature infants did not survive in the past. Because human babies require a great deal of care for a long time, a huge investment is required. Psychological stress may lead to reproductive failure if the parents are not capable of making that investment.

Interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor-I in the cord blood as predictors of chronic lung disease in premature infants
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine inflammatory cytokines and their profile in the cord blood of premature infants who were later complicated with chronic lung disease (CLD), and to assess whether these cytokines could be used as markers to predict the development of CLD in these infants. A major finding of the study was that the cord blood interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and soluble tumor necrosis factor-I (sTNFR-I) were significantly elevated in CLD infants compared with those in the control group.

Elevation of total nitrite and nitrate concentration in vaginal secretions as a predictor of premature delivery
Article Abstract:
Elevated levels of nitrite and nitrate in cervical fluid samples from pregnant women may indicate premature rupture of membranes and a premature birth, according to a study of 96 pregnant women. The source of the nitrites and nitrates is not known, but could be a result of infection.
