Stressful nurses: the effect on patient outcomes
Article Abstract:
A study comparing staffing problems and self-reported nurse stress over a 3- month period showed a strong correlation between the degree of a hospital unit's Stress Continuum Scale and the rate of patient incidents. Most nurses choose their profession based on the desire to care for others, yet the emotional and behavioral pressure of working with critically ill persons is considerable. Health care managers need to help nurses develop coping responses to job-related stress.

'hat do you call your patients?
Article Abstract:
Patients are not passive recipients of services and are asking to be more involved in their own health care. Providers treat patients as respected customers, but seldom inquire about how they wished to be addressed by members of the health care team. A survey at a 150-bed community hospital showed that most participants, adults who could read English, wished nurses to address them by their first names. Those with professional titles were excluded from the study.
