Strike call if pay rise sticks at 2.5%
Article Abstract:
The UK Royal College of Nurses (RCN) is calling for strike action if the government fails to enhance its pay offer of a 2.5% rise in 1999. The government decided the pay award after the Pay Review Body recommended a rise linked to inflation-only. Nurses pay would be improved through benefits rather than direct pay, according to the Department of Health. Nursing unions claim the pay award would damage already low morale within the profession, which would have a knock-on effect on staffing levels.

Unison steps up pay strike threats
Article Abstract:
Staff at 20 NHS trusts in the East Midlands may shortly be instructed by Unison to take strike action over delays by the trusts in making pay offers to nurses. Trusts have counterattacked by blaming the current pay conflict on unrealistic pay claims and on lack of effective management by nursing unions of their members. Some staff representatives have been responsible for slowing down pay negotiations, according to a survey by the National Association of Health Authorities and Trusts.

Down to the nitty-gritty
Article Abstract:
The UK's Nursing and Midwifery Staff's Negotiating Council is responsible for negotiating pay settlements for nurses with the Pay Review Body (PRB). It meets four time a year to agree tactics, and presents evidence to the PRB which will be used to assist it in recommending a pay deal for nurses to the government. The members of the Negotiating Council almost always work very effectively together, but do not hesitate to criticize the government if they believe this to be necessary.
