Subcutaneous compared with intravenous epoetin in patients receiving hemodialysis
Article Abstract:
Subcutaneous injections of epoetin rather than intravenous infusions can allow patients to receive lower doses of the costly drug. Epoetin is a synthetic version of a natural hormone that increases the production of red blood cells. Researchers evaluated both forms of administration in 208 patients with end-stage kidney disease who were on dialysis. These patients often develop anemia, which epoetin can reverse. Subcutaneous injections allowed physicians to lower the dose by 32% and 86% of those who received the injections were able to tolerate the pain of the injection.
