Supporting Roe or going too far?
Article Abstract:
The Freedom of Choice Act has been introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The bill would make Roe vs Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, into a federal law. It would also reverse state restrictions on abortion, such as waiting periods, that were instituted during the 1980s. Some pro-choice groups feel that the bill does not go far enough, and anti-abortion groups are protesting it on a number of grounds. For example, they oppose the late-term abortions that the bill would permit under certain circumstances.

Castration for sex offenders: questions arise over effectiveness, appropriateness, ethics
Article Abstract:
Medical authorities disagree on whether castration, surgical or chemical, prevents rapists from repeating their crimes. Nevertheless, a number of states reduce the sentences of convicted sex offenders and child molesters who agree to take Depo-Provera, a drug that inhibits sex drive. Psychiatrists say that castration does not prevent rape, the act of an angry, hostile offender who wants to feel power over his victim. Also, for ethical reasons, most physicians are unwilling to cooperate with the state in punishing offenders.

Hemlock leaders reveal strategy in campaign for suicide aid
Article Abstract:
The Hemlock Society is hopeful that the Supreme Court will give states the power to decide if physicians can assist their patients in ending their lives, after appellate courts overturned bans on assisted suicide in Washington and New York. The Supreme Court will hear these cases in 1997. In 1994, Oregon passed legislation allowing physicians to quicken patients' deaths, but it has been held up by legal challenges.
