Suppression of myometrial contractile responses to oxytocin after different durations of chronic hypoxia in the near-term pregnant rat
Article Abstract:
Oxytocin appears to provide decreasing stimulation for uterine contractions after prolonged periods of low oxygen supply. A similar effect is not evident for aluminum fluoride stimulation. The uteruses of 20 pregnant rats were evaluated for contractile strength in response to oxytocin and aluminum fluoride after 12, 24, 48, or no hours with low oxygen supply. Contractile strength in response to oxytocin and available sites to bind with oxytocin decreased starting at 24 hours of low oxygen supply. Contractile strength in response to aluminum fluoride did not change with longer exposure to low oxygen supply.

Long-term high-altitude hypoxia increases plasma nitrate levels in pregnant ewes and their fetuses
Article Abstract:
Chronic exposure to low levels of oxygen appears to increase the production of nitric oxide in pregnant animals and their fetuses. Researchers measured the amount of nitric oxide in blood samples from pregnant sheep and their fetuses, as well as non-pregnant sheep. Pregnancy caused nitric oxide levels to rise and chronic exposure to low levels of oxygen caused a greater increase. In either case, nitric oxide levels were higher in the fetus than in the mother.

Oxytocin activates mitogen-activated protein kinase and up-regulates cyclooxygenase-2 and prostaglandin production in human myometrial cells
Article Abstract:
Oxytocin appears to act via mitogen-activated protein kinase, cyclooxygenase-2, and prostaglandins. This may be the mechanism for sustained action of oxytocin during labor, as opposed to a short-term action that involves an increase in calcium levels.
