Surgeons share the burden
Article Abstract:
Surgeons should help share the burden of treating the impoverished and medically uninsured population. Surgeons William Schecter and Douglas Grey and hospital administrator Paul Hoffman formed the Ambulatory Surgery Access Coalition at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco, CA, to provide routine surgery for the poor. Dr. Grey estimates that the coalition can perform hernia repair for about $40, excluding physician and hospital fees. If the patient waited until the hernia was a medical emergency, the cost of surgery would increase to $40,000, including fees and hospital stay.

Limiting IMGs won't affect most hospitals in serving poor
Article Abstract:
Limiting the number of international medical graduates (IMGs) in US residency programs would not adversely affect the treatment of poor patients, according to a new study. IMGs typically serve at hospitals that have large concentrations of such patients. Using two criteria for declaring a hospital residency program dependent on IMGs, the study found that only 77 hospitals nationwide qualified. One-third of them were located in New York State.
