Surgery for the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Article Abstract:
Surgery may be beneficial in patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by the formation of peptic ulcers caused by too much stomach acid. The excess acid is often produced by a tumor called a gastrinoma. A 1999 study of patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome found that surgeons were able to remove most of the patients' tumors. They used a technique called somatostatin-receptor scintigraphy to find the tumors. This technique found 80% of the gastrinomas. Ten years later, 80% to 90% of the patients were still alive.

Reversal of type 1 diabetes in mice
Article Abstract:
Three studies conducted independently support the finding that autoimmune diabetes in mice can be permanently reversed, concluding that the adjuvant-dependent dampening of the autoimmune attack, coupled with the recovery of residual host islets, underlies the cure. The studies also illustrate the dramatic response of beta cells to environmental signals, where the beta cells recovered from an immune attack and proliferated to restore beta-cell mass.
