Surveillance for penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae - New York City, 1995
Article Abstract:
Statistics from the New York City Department of Health (NYCDOH) reveal that young children and HIV patients have the highest risk of becoming infected with penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (PNSP). Although this bacterium used to be susceptible to penicillin, it is becoming nonsusceptible and even resistant to the antibiotic. In 1995, 282 cases of PNSP infection were reported to NYCDOH. About half were serious infections of the blood or cerebrospinal fluid and eight people died. Almost half of the bacterial isolates were resistant to penicillin.

Aspirin sensitivity
Article Abstract:
A diagnostic strategy was provided for evaluating and treating patients with aspirin sensitivity, with additional consideration for issues specific to patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). It was found that in patients with a nonsteroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) sensitivity and concomitant CAD, acetylsalicylic acid desensitization therapy may be considered given aspirin's excellent clinical efficacy, low-risk profile, and cost-effectiveness.

Is This Patient Allergic to Penicillin? An Evidence-Based Analysis of the Likelihood of Penicillin Allergy
Article Abstract:
About 80% to 90% of patients who believe they have an allergy to penicillin are not really allergic to the drug. Skin testing can rule out penicillin allergy in those who believe they are allergic.
