Erythrocyte and erythropoietin responses to hemorrhage in the immature and near term ovine fetus
Article Abstract:
Changes in red cell mass and erythropoietin levels in response to severe blood loss are similar in immature and term fetuses, according to a study in sheep. Immature fetuses have a greater increase in blood volume than term fetuses, presumably because they have a greater extracellular fluid volume.

Swallowing, urine flow, and amniotic fluid volume responses to prolonged hypoxia in the ovine fetus
Article Abstract:
The authors have investigated the hypothesis that fetal swallowing and intramembranous absorption can increase with prolonged hypoxia. Results have demonstrated that hypoxia leads to fetal polyuria with small changes in amniotic fluid volume.

Correction of hemorrhage-induced anemai with intra-amniotic iron in the ovine fetus
Article Abstract:
Injecting iron directly into the amniotic fluid may be an effective treatment for fetal anemia. Anemia is most often caused by extreme blood loss. Researchers gave intra-amniotic injections to seven pregnant sheep whose fetus had hemorrhaged. Eleven other pregnant sheep whose fetus had hemorrhaged were not treated. Red blood cell production increased about 30% within seven days of the hemorrhage in the treated sheep, but did not increase in the sheep who were not treated. All mammals have a hormone that increases red blood cell production, but it may not work effectively in the absence of iron.
