Tailor-made treatment
Article Abstract:
It is essential to make holistic assessment of wounds before effective treatment can take place. Pressure sores can be caused by shearing, friction and unrelieved pressure and the main pressure areas are the sacrum, trochanter, ischial tuberiosities and heels and elbows. The care of a confused elderly man with a pressure sore is described. The patient was nursed in bed on an alternating pressure mattress and his diabetes had to be taken into consideration when assessing his wound. Catheterization was also undertaken as a temporary measure.

Sitting pretty
Article Abstract:
Seated patients should be assessed for pressure sore risk when being cared for under medical supervision. Poor posture is the main cause of pressure sores in people who are wheelchair bound. Altering load tolerance is an ideal way of reducing the risk of pressure sores. Load tolerance can be changed through the use of cushions, water, air or gel, depending on the individual risk of sores occurring. Patients should be taught the correct seating position for maximum pressure relief and body support.
