Time to grieve
Article Abstract:
Accident and emergency nurses can offer vital support to parents whose child is in hospital for an attempt at resuscitation following a cot death incident. Nurses should keep parents informed about what is happening, they should explain clearly when a resuscitation attempt fails, and they should talk about the events which will follow. They should be available if the parents want to talk, and understand that parents will react to grief in different ways. Nurses should be able to cope with particular situations, including lone parenthood or the emotions of grandparents.

The killing of Sister Plume
Article Abstract:
Sister Plume was a character who was portrayed in Nursing Times from 1980 to 1990. Sister Plume ran a strictly controlled ward using old fashioned methods of patient care which seem out-dated now. However, it is argued that these methods reflected the high standards of the time and they were effective and efficient. Patients did not get pressure sores and each person was carefully observed. Nurses are now educated to degree standard, however, it is argued that Sister Plume and other like her were just as reflective and imaginative then as nurses are today.

The healing touch: admission to hospital can be a particularly unsettling experience for patients with a dual sensory impairment
Article Abstract:
Many people with dual sensory impairment will need to visit hospitals for reasons not connected to their sensory status. Nurses need to consider how to make the patient feel secure and informed. Interpreters can help with communications, although not 24 hours a day, and a deaf and blind person can experience isolation stress. Tactile reassurance should be offered to alleviate the sense of isolation and deaf-blind communications skills should be acquired.
