The teaching cure: much of medicine involves teaching, yet few physicians know how to do it well
Article Abstract:
Physicians use teaching in their interaction with both patients and medical students, but few are taught effective teaching techniques. A program at Stanford University addresses this problem by offering special training for physicians. Physicians learn to create a good atmosphere for learning, use classroom management techniques, find out the learner's goals, organize the material and evaluate how well the learner has retained the information. Physicians are also taught to give feedback and encourage self-directed learning.

Getting a leg up on managed care
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) provides a program for physicians who need to learn to negotiate with managed care organizations. Physicians need to concentrate their efforts on service quality, practice efficiency and patient education. As physicians excel in these areas, their ability to negotiate with managed care organizations will improve. The AMA program includes networks of consultants and attorneys, workshops and in-house instruction and publications.
