Working together
Article Abstract:
There are three groups and about 250 nurses offering specialist support to new ostomy patients after they have received major bladder or bowel surgery, Urostomy Assocation (UA), Ileostomy Association (IA), and British Colostomy Association (BCA). Mostly support group members and the professionals work in harmony, though ostomy associations which were set up some time ago have had to change their function, with the training of nurses to suit all the needs of ostomy patients; and there is some tension, as the support groups do not like the attitude of some nurses who consider that stoma patients after undergoing surgery should live normal lives, and they feel nurses are not aware of long-term ostomists' difficulties. Nevertheless, it is believed that the support groups do offer a special service to these patients. The practice of the groups and their relationship with nurses is examined.

Sleeping like a baby
Article Abstract:
Some professionals and parents may be confused by the Health Department changing its advice on the sleeping position for infants aimed at lowering the risk of crib death. Many mothers feel the advice that babies should lay on their backs or sides could be unjustified. Health professionals must first be convinced it is safer for babies to sleep on their backs in order to increase the effectiveness of the message, with the government giving more training and guidance.

Public inconvenience
