Weight cycling, weight gain, and risk of hypertension in women
Article Abstract:
Weight gain, weight cycling, and hypertension risk in women are discussed. A study was carried out to assess prospectively the relationship between body mass index, weight gain, repeated intentional weight losses and risk of self-reported hypertension with 46,224 women as subjects, participants in the Nurses Health Study II who had no hypertension in 1993. Data do not suggest an independent effect of weight cycling on hypertension risk. Weight and weight gain were strong independent predictors for hypertension development and were strongly associated with weight cycler status. Weight cyclers weight more than others and gained significantly more weight over the 4-year study period.

Long-Term Weight Patterns and Risk for Cholecystectomy in Women
Article Abstract:
Substantial and repeated weight-loss and weight-gain in women may significantly increase the risk of gallbladder disease requiring cholecystectomy. Researchers studied 47,153 women over six years, and found that 1,751 ultimately underwent surgical removal of their gallbladder. Weight cycling was reported by 55% of the studied women. Women who lost and gained under 10 pounds repeatedly had a 20% greater risk, and those that cycled 20 pounds had a 68% greater risk, of gallbladder surgery than those who maintained a relatively constant bodyweight.
