The 1990 Florida dental investigation: is the case really closed?
Article Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) investigation into the transmission of HIV from an infected dentist in Florida to six of his patients may have been flawed. The CDC concluded, after the dentist's death, that he had somehow transmitted HIV to his patients. A journalist from the "60 Minutes" television news show questions specific facets of the CDC investigation, as well as two medical articles confirming the CDC investigation. The six patients may have had other risk factors for HIV, including high risk sexual behavior and drug use. The DNA sequence analyses used to compare the strains of HIV in the dentist and the six infected patients may not be definitive and may have even been contaminated. The public may benefit from a more open examination of the case.

AMA's med students fight to protect student loans
Article Abstract:
The median educational debt for medical school graduates has reached $71,000 as of 1996, $21,000 higher than the 1992 figure. The American Medical Association's Medical Student Section has begun advocacy efforts, with the hope of convincing Congress to pursue reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, a cost-controlling measure which has not been reauthorized since 1992. Specifically, graduate medical students want the next reauthorization to maintain the definition of "economic hardship", continue forbearance provisions and preserve student loan exemptions.
