The Alabama preterm birth study: Polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cell placental infiltrations, other markers of inflammation, and outcomes in 23- to 32-week preterm newborn infants
Article Abstract:
The relationship between placental polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cell infiltrations with bacterial cultures, markers of inflammation and preterm outcomes is evaluated. The analysis has shown that the polymorphonuclear infiltrations of the free membranes, chronic plate and umbilical cord are associated with positive intrauterine cultures and elevated cord blood interleukin-6.

The feasibility of a randomized clinical perinatal trial: maternal magnesium sulfate for the prevention of cerebral palsy
Article Abstract:
A research study to test the effectiveness of magnesium sulfate in preventing cerebral palsy in premature infants would be difficult. Researchers calculated the number of eligible pregnancies that would be needed to conduct such a study. In order to see a statistical treatment effect, 1,189 eligible pregnancies would have to be identified. Accounting for ineligibility factors would require an initial study population of 1 million pregnancies. The number of eligible pregnancies would vary depending on the target pregnancy length.
