The effects of physical abuse on pregnancy outcomes in a low-risk obstetric population
Article Abstract:
Physical abuse during pregnancy does not have any severe consequences to the baby, according to a study of 28 abused pregnant women and 56 non-abused pregnant women. Babies of abused women were more likely to be treated in a neonatal intensive care unit, but the number was still relatively small.

Ultrasonographic assessment of amniotic fluid does not reflect actual amniotic fluid volume
Article Abstract:
Two techniques for evaluating amniotic fluid volume (AFV) do not appear to accurately identify patients with abnormally high or low AFVs. Either extreme has been associated with fetal abnormalities. A dye test was used to determine actual AFVs of 144 pregnant women. These results were compared with ultrasound measurements of these same women using two sampling techniques. One technique measures the diameter of the largest fluid pocket while the other estimates the area. Neither sampling technique compared favorably with the results obtained with the dye test.

The accuracy of the summated amniotic fluid index in evaluating amniotic fluid volume in twin pregnancies
Article Abstract:
The use of the summated amniotic fluid index to determine the volume of amniotic fluid in twin pregnancies may not identify abnormalities, especially when the volume is different for each baby. In 62 twin pregnancies where each fetus had an individual amniotic sac, 90% were identified as normal when volumes differed and at least one twin had abnormal fluid amounts. When both had low fluid volume, 80% were identified as normal. The summated amniotic fluid index uses ultrasound techniques to estimate total amniotic fluid volume, not individual volumes for each twin.
