The antidepressant quandary--Considering suicide risk when treating adolescent depression
Article Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration investigations reveal that the risk of suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, or a suicide attempt is approximately twice as high among children and adolescents receiving one of the newer antidepressant drugs, like fluoxetine and sertraline, as among those receiving placebo. However, there is considerable uncertainty regarding this relationship as large observational studies document that the risk of a suicide attempt actually decreases after patients begin taking medication.

What ails the FDA?
Article Abstract:
The Vioxx debacle and the FDA's slowness in warning physicians and patients about the studies linking the use of antidepressants among adolescents to an increased risk of suicidal behavior have raised questions about the agency's ability to fulfill one of its fundamental missions to ensure that the benefits of prescription drugs outweigh their risks. Some of the causes relating to FDA's poor performance and need for better ways to monitor the drugs are discussed.
