The benefits of larval therapy in wound care
Article Abstract:
UK health professionals are taking a renewed interest in larval therapy. The therapy, which uses sterile maggots from greenbottle flies, was particularly popular in the US in the 1930s, but interest declined with the advent of antibiotics. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria resurrected interest and a Bridgend and District NHS Trust team commenced clinical trials in 1996. Initial studies indicated that the therapy promotes rapid wound cleansing, inhibits wound odour production and prevents infection. The therapy appears to be effective for conditions including foot wounds in diabetes.

How care in the community has affected older people
Article Abstract:
The UK government's care in the community policy has led to dramatic changes in approaches to caring for the elderly, according to health professionals. Local authorities are reported to be sending elderly people who need specialist nursing care into residential homes, thus putting additional pressure on district and community nurses, who are called in by residential homes. Some elderly people are having to fund their own care, while others are being dealt with by unskilled healthcare assistants.

Too little too late?
Article Abstract:
Health trusts are holding back from paying nurses their 3% pay rise. An estimated 27 trusts are holding out on staff. The average nurse is still due back pay of roughly 270 pounds sterling, according to the RCN. Trusts claim that they will have to make redundancies in order to afford the pay rise.
