The beta3-adrenergic receptor - a cause and cure of obesity?
Article Abstract:
Defects in the gene coding for the beta3-adrenergic receptor may play a role in the development of obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). This receptor is found on the cell membranes of fat cells and attaches to hormone molecules secreted by the adrenal glands. Adrenal hormones, among other things, help regulate energy expenditure. Studies in the Pima Indians, Finns, and the French have variously found that a mutation in the gene coding for the beta3-adrenergic receptor is associated with early onset of NIDDM, a lower metabolic rate, insulin resistance and greater weight gain in extremely overweight patients. These findings should be interpreted with caution because differences were small. However animal experiments with substances that enhance functioning of the receptor have found that this results in increased heat generation through burning of fat and weight loss.

Obesity associated with a mutation in a genetic regulator of adipocyte differentiation
Article Abstract:
A genetic mutation which promotes the growth of fat cells may be associated with obesity in some people. Researchers in Germany examined 358 people for mutations in the gene for the peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor gamma 2, and found the mutant gene in four of 121 obese people. Only obese patients had the mutation, and those with it were considerably more overweight than obese people without the gene.
