The bite of rabies: prevention and control strategies for rabies zoonosis
Article Abstract:
Rabies is a preventable, treatable disease. The number of rabies cases contracted through wild animals has increased from 1990-1993. Once symptoms develop, the infected person dies, and rabies kills from 40,000 to 100,000 persons each year, worldwide. Approximately 18,000 persons are vaccinated in the US each year to prevent rabies after exposure, costing $45 mil. Health care providers must decide to vaccinate on the basis of animal species, location of the incident, and wound location.
