The capitation revolution in health care: implications for the field of nursing
Article Abstract:
Capitation requires redesigning of health care organizations because with capitation, providing care becomes a debit, not a source of revenue. This means organizations must control costs. Staff costs are the most amenable to manipulation. This means reduced core nursing staff, shifting of the types of nurses used, and more temporary staff. Nurse managers have the task of building loyalty and commitment in an environment that least supports it, which is difficult but can be done.

Nurse case manager roles: implications for practice and education
Article Abstract:
A case management approach is recommended for patients with complex or extended term needs, who represent a risk of high medical costs. The Broker Model of Case Management specifies nurses as case managers, often employed by insurance companies, but their role and training are poorly defined. A study identifying nurses' roles in the Broker Model is described. The history of case management and other models are also discussed.

The nurse executive as integrator: creating a field of health caring
Article Abstract:
Nurse executives often find their duties as manager in conflict with their commitment to quality patient care in the traditional health-care setting. The current restructuring of patient care with multidisciplinary teams and decentralized delivery systems allow nurse managers to take a leading role in integrating management and patient care, drawing on their expertise in both areas.
