The clock gene Per2 influences the glutamatergic system and modulates alcohol consumption
Article Abstract:
Per2(super Brdm1) mutant mice, which have a deletion in the PAS domain of the Per2 protein, show alterations in the glutamatergic system. It was observed that as glutamate levels in the extracellular space of Per2(super Brdm1) mutant mouse brains increases, the alcohol intake in these animals also increases.

Clock reset for alcoholism
Article Abstract:
The clock gene 'Per2' provides evidence that alcoholics with a specific set of polymorphs in the Per2 gene consume less alcohol than alcoholics without the polymorphs. In mice, increase in the intake of alcohol is mainly due to excess of glutamate in the brain.
