The cracked tooth syndrome: a pragmatic treatment approach
Article Abstract:
The number of individuals suffering from cracked tooth syndrome may be increasing. Cracked tooth syndrome can cause symptoms such as increased sensitivity to cold and sugar-containing foods. Diagnosis of patients with cracked tooth syndrome may be accomplished by applying force to the tooth. This can be done using dental instruments designed to apply force to each of the cusps of the tooth. Most cracks are superficial without significant involvement of the root of the tooth, but a few are complex. Patients should be advised about possible treatment plans depending on the type of crack. A crown or an onlay tooth preparation is usually successful for treating a tooth with a superficial crack. Treating a complex crack is often less successful. Patients with a complex crack may sometimes need to have the tooth extracted because of ongoing pain.
