The drug squad
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of UK nurses are leaving the National Health Service and moving to posts in the pharmaceutical and health care industries. Their posts include those of sales representative, clinical nurse specialist and nurse advisor. The companies value the skills which trained nurses bring with them, and are prepared to pay them accordingly. Nurses working in this sort of environment may sometimes face ethical dilemmas or concerns about job security, but they appreciate the opportunity to work in an environment with regular working hours and easy access to training.

Further afield
Article Abstract:
Many British nurses are interesting in working abroad, although there are now fewer positions available abroad than there were in the 1980s and early 1990s. There is still demand from the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia, and developing countries still require experienced midwives and health visitors. According to the RCN, it is advisable for nurses to gain at least six months post-registration experience in the UK before seeking employment abroad.

Opportunity knocks in the community
Article Abstract:
Community nursing can provide nurses with the opportunity for career development since the restrictions to nurse-led primary health care services were reduced by the UK Primary Care Act. However, health promotion and prevention of illness should still be the core goals of district nurses and health visitors. General practitioners are more supportive of community nurses and community nursing provides nurses with more autonomy and task variety.
