The effect of cytokine mediators on prostaglandin inhibition by human decidual cells
Article Abstract:
Interleukin-1-beta appears to cause the production of prostaglandin E in fetal membranes. Researchers stimulated prostaglandin E production in fetal membrane samples taken from pregnant women by culturing them with bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Other similar cultures were also exposed to antibodies against interleukin-1-beta (anti-interleukin-1) and transforming growth factor. After 24 hours, anti-interleukin-1-beta had reduced prostaglandin E levels, as did transforming growth factor. Anti-interleukin-1-beta also inhibited interleukin-1-beta production.

The optimal route of delivery for fetal meningomyelocele
Article Abstract:
Infants who had a meningomyelocele during pregnancy may have similar outcomes regardless of how they were delivered. Meningomyelocele is a defect in the spine that exposes the spinal cord. Cesarean section is normally recommended in these cases. Researchers followed the status of 36 children who were born with meningomyelocele at one hospital between 1971 and 1995. There were no differences in fetal mortality, birth weight, age at birth or long-term neurologic outcome between those delivered vaginally and those delivered by cesarean section.

Genetic susceptibility to preeclampsia: roles of cytosine-to-thymine substitution at nucleotide 677 of the gene for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, 68-base pair insertion at nucleotide 844 of the gene for cystathionine beta-synthase, and factor V Leiden mutation
Article Abstract:
Three common gene mutations that predispose people to blood vessel disease and abnormal blood clotting are no more frequent in pregnant women with preeclampsia than other pregnant women. Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy that is characterized by blood vessel dysfunction and other abnormalities.
