The effect of growth factors on the proliferation of human endometrial stromal cells in culture
Article Abstract:
Different growth factors may increase the proliferation of endometrial stromal cells in women with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue resembling the lining of the uterine (endometrium) occurs in other parts of the pelvic cavity. A study examined the effect of different growth factors and inflammation mediators on the proliferation of human endometrial stromal cells in the laboratory. Proliferation of stromal cells increased significantly after treatment with epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor-alpha, transforming growth factor-beta and fibroblast growth factor. Cell proliferation increased as the dosage of the different growth factors increased. Tumor necrosis factor had an effect only in combination with fibroblast growth factor. Growth factors are secreted by macrophages, which are cells of the immune system.

Platelet-derived growth factor promotes endometrial epithelial cell proliferation
Article Abstract:
Human endometrial tissue appears to have receptors for platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). This chemical, produced by blood cells called platelets, is involved in wound healing and other regenerative states. Researchers developed endometrial cell lines from two women who had hysterectomies and measured the proliferation of the cells in media with and without PDGF. Cell proliferation increased significantly in the presence of PDGF, especially 18 to 24 hours after it was added to the medium. This indicates that endometrial tissue has receptors for PDGF and that PDGF could stimulate cell proliferation by increasing the production of other growth factors. Chemicals that block PDGF could be a promising treatment for endometriosis.

Functional oxytocin receptors in a human endometrial cell line
Article Abstract:
The Ishikawa cell line contains functional oxytocin receptors and can be used to study the action of oxytocin at the molecular level. This cell line was created from tissue samples from a woman with endometrial cancer.
