The effect of maternal position on fetal heart rate during epidural or intrathecal labor analgesia
Article Abstract:
The position of the mother has no effect on fetal heart rate when analgesics are given during labor. Some studies have found a slowing of the fetal heart rate following analgesia and suspected maternal position was to blame. Researchers measured fetal heart rate in 305 women in labor receiving either epidural or intraspinal injections of analgesics. The women laid either on their backs or left side. Slowing of fetal heart rate occurred regardless of which position the mother was in and regardless of which analgesic she received.

A comparison of intermittent and continuous support during labor: a meta-analysis
Article Abstract:
The constant presence of a doula appears to have a beneficial impact on the outcome of labor in pregnant women. A doula is a woman who provides support to the mother during labor. Researchers used a statistical technique called meta-analysis to evaluate 11 clinical trials of continuous or intermittent support by a doula during labor. Compared to intermittent doula support of no doula support, continuous doula support led to shorter labors, less use of painkillers, oxytocin, a forceps delivery and a cesarean section.

Management of labor in Eisenmenger syndrome with inhaled nitric oxide
Article Abstract:
Inhaled nitric oxide may be beneficial during labor in pregnant women with Eisenmenger syndrome. Eisenmenger syndrome is hypertension in the lungs usually caused by a congenital heart defect. A woman with an atrial septal defect was successfully treated with nitric oxide during labor, but she died of the disease 21 days later.
