A change of mind
Article Abstract:
Career opportunities for Registered Mental Nurses (RMNs) are expected to increase after 1999 as the UK government invests 70 million pounds sterling in improving mental health care provision and the training of staff who work within the profession. The government is committed to funding improvements in the service with the backing of legal changes which give greater powers to detain people suffering from mental illness. Several high profile cases have highlighted the need for extra detention powers when dealing with people suffering from severe personality disorder.

Seeing into the future

It will take Kenyan health professionals until the year 2000 to fully treat all 5,000 people injured in the US embassy bombing which took place in August 1998. The victims are mainly suffering from schrapnel injury, burns, blunt injury and lung damage. Kenyan hospitals are being inundated with severely wounded people, who often have high expectations of recovery. British surgeons have been donating their time to care for people injured in the blast. The bomb also killed 253 people.
