The effects of parathyroid hormone, alendronate, or both in men with osteoporosis
Article Abstract:
Parathyroid hormone and alendronate together may be less effective for treating osteoporosis than either one alone, according to a study of 83 men. Parathyroid hormone stimulates bone growth and alendronate prevents bone destruction. So researchers believed the two treatments would be better than either one alone. In this study, the combination was actually less effective than parathyroid hormone alone. Alendronate may interfere with the beneficial effects of parathyroid hormone.

The effects of strontium ranelate on the risk of vertebral fracture in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis
Article Abstract:
The drug strontium ranelate may strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women, according to a study of 1,649 women. Over a three-year period, women who took the drug were almost half as likely to fracture a bone as women who did not. They also had greater bone density in the spine and hip after three years of treatment.

Effect of parathyroid hormone (1-34) on fractures and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis
Article Abstract:
A subcutaneous injection of the first 34 amino acids of parathyroid hormone can increase bone density and prevent fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, according to a study of 1,637 women. A daily 20-microgram dose was as effective as a 40-microgram dose and had fewer side effects.
