The enigma of low birth weight and race
Article Abstract:
More research on the social, economic and behavioral differences between races must be done before differences in birth weights can be attributed to genetics. Black infants have a lower birth weight on average than white infants. However, black infants may be more likely to be born into poverty and their mothers may have experienced barriers to receiving adequate prenatal care. Overall, birth weights tend to increase as the mother's socioeconomic status increases, regardless of her race. On the other hand, black women of equal socioeconomic status as white women still have a higher risk of low birth weight babies.

Racial disparity in rates of surgery for lung cancer
Article Abstract:
One reason blacks have a higher incidence of lung cancer is because more blacks smoke than whites. However, the higher death rate from lung cancer among blacks may have several causes. A 1999 study showed that blacks with non-small-cell lung cancer were 12.7% less likely than white patients to have surgery. Surgery can cure this type of lung cancer if the cancer is diagnosed in its early stages. Blacks had lower 5-year survival rates than the whites. However, if blacks had surgery at the same rate as whites, their prognosis would probably be the same.
