Case 16-2003: A 58-year-old woman with left-sided weakness and a right frontal brain mass
Article Abstract:
The case of a 58-year-old woman is presented who developed a bacterial brain abscess within two weeks of having four tooth cavities filled. The abscess was surgically drained and she was treated with antibiotics. The doctors believed the infection had come from her mouth during the dental treatment. She was also found to have a patent foramen ovale in her heart, which may have contributed to the spread of the infection.

Apoptosis and caspases in neurodegenerative diseases
Article Abstract:
A review of nerve cell death is presented, focusing on the caspase family of proteases. Nerve cell death is a prominent feature of many neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Because nerve cells cannot be regenerated, it is important to prevent cell death from occurring in the first place.
