The evolving role of the nephrology nurse
Article Abstract:
The role of the nephrology nurse has been changing throughout the second half of the 20th century due to medical advances and transfers of professional responsibilities. Nurses have taken on more long-term duties due to the development of transplantation and dialysis techniques. Nurses also undertake more renal care in the community since the development of home dialysis. Renal nurses began defining their role and forming objectives after the establishment of special professional groups and committees during the 1980s.

Leeds General Infirmary, UK, set up a project led by nurses to enable kidney patients receiving peritoneal dialysis to obtain the maximum benefits from recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO). R-HuEPO can save patients from sensitization of the immune system as a result of blood transfusions, and from symptoms associated with anaemia.
