Listening brief in nursing homes
Article Abstract:
A 12 month study of standards in homes for the elderly by the UK Office of Fair Trading has suggested all residents should be given contracts and made fully aware of the arrangements made for their care. Representatives of nursing home owners point out the needs of the elderly are being met by a number of agencies which should join together to provide good quality care. Staffing in a number of homes was inadequate. But independent nursing home owners have called for public funding to help pay to train their staff. Some 75% of the 969 elderly patients questioned were very happy with their homes.

A singular campaign
Article Abstract:
Campaigners in the UK are continuing their fight for the reinstatement of single-sex wards in hospitals. The crusade, spearheaded by tabloid newspapers and joined by charities including Age Concern and the Patients Association, won some concessions, but no financial commitment, from the Conservative government. Campaigners hope for legislation from the new Labour government, and are demanding an end to open wards by Oct 1998. Some campaigners highlight the rising trend in assault cases, whilst others indicate the general desire for privacy and dignity.

Bed choices for physically vulnerable patients
Article Abstract:
A new hospital bed design has been commissioned by the King's Fund in the United Kingdom, with the original bed still widely used within National Health Service hospitals. The new bed must be designed so as to take into account UK and European standards and costs, as well as practical aspects such as adaptability, cleaning methods and the prevention of back injury to nurses. The project is due to be completed by end-1997. A number of pressure-relieving beds and mattresses are already available for vulnerable patients.
