The fourth-year medical school curriculum: recommendations of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Article Abstract:
A broad-based curriculum of general medicine would be the most appropriate for fourth-year medical students interested in a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. This recommendation was made by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. A survey of 24 faculty members and 20 residents from university-based hospitals asked participants to rank 30 study areas in order of importance. Participants were also asked to list up to three additional areas they would consider important. High-risk obstetrics, intensive care and general medicine were the residents' most-requested electives. The faculty members selected electives in general medicine, intensive care and family medicine as their first three choices.

The in-training examination in obstetrics and gynecology: an attempt to establish a remediation indicator
Article Abstract:
Third-year obstetrics residents who score two standard deviations below average on a national standardized test may need additional instruction. The Committee on In-Training Examinations for Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology Task Force on Standard-Based Scoring asked 28 faculty members to evaluate the 1991 examination. Faculty members considered which items on the exam a hypothetical marginal third-year resident would and would not be able to answer. University faculty members agreed with community hospital faculty on a cutoff score of 58%, which happens to be two standard deviations below the average score. Actual performance should be considered along with knowledge before residents are told to receive additional instruction.

The obstetrics and gynecology clerkship: Building a better model from past experience
Article Abstract:
Risk factors contributing to the poor student perception of the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship are examined in a study. Addressing those aspects that could explain the low ratings of the obstetrics and gynecology rotation will be critical for improving the overall student perception of the clerkship.
