The frustration of not connecting with a scared patient
Article Abstract:
Helping patients who have low incomes can be personally rewarding for a physician. However, the times when a doctor is unable to connect with a patient who is scared or angry can be frustrating. An encounter with a 17-year-old girl is described. The girl, who has three children, has incurable human papillomavirus and is at risk for cervical cancer. The patient declines to look at her doctor during the visit.

AMA reports hidden epidemic of elderly alcoholism
Article Abstract:
Alcohol-related hospitalizations are as numerous as hospitalizations for heart attacks among people over 60 yrs of age, according to the American Medical Association. However, alcoholism and alcohol-related diseases are largely undiagnosed by physicians. A new pamphlet encourages physicians to screen elderly patients for alcoholism, since many commonly prescribed drugs interact negatively with alcohol.
