The future of accredited OH&S certification
Article Abstract:
Accredited certification of Occupational Health and Safety management systems has been opposed by most industry associations, including the FSB and CBI, with the CBI believing 'caveat emptor' should apply to buyers of non-accredited certification products. Many companies want certification, but the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents believes mandatory certification could be an inappropriate burden for smaller businesses. BSI will initiate a consultation to ascertain views on the issue.

Article Abstract:
Small companies in the UK have 50% more accidents than in companies which employ over 50 workers. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents want small companies to devise a strategy for safety which would incorporate information on the main areas where safety is a problem and detail an action plan should an accident occur. Safety Information Centres for small businesses may provide an information service to groups of managers or on an individual basis.

Ozone exposure advice
Article Abstract:
Ozone occurs naturally in low concentrations in the atmosphere. In increased concentrations, ozone can cause irritation to the respiratory system and severe damage to the lungs. A revised guidance note published by the UK Health and Safety Executive updates the advice given to employers on how to contain the risks of ozone exposure. The advice relates to a new Occupational Exposure Standard dating from January 1996.
