Myeloid Colony-Stimulating Factors
Article Abstract:
Bacterial and fungal infections are major killers of newborn infants, with the mortality rate of very low birth weight infants from infection at about 15%. Neutropenia, or a deficiency of the white blood cells known as neutrophils, is a characteristic on infants with this problem. Some clinical trials have used granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) to increase neutrophil counts. But there is a theoretical question of safety connected to the use of G-CSF and GM-CSF as to whether or not it may increase a later risk of leukemia. More long-term trials are needed.

"Turning brain into blood" -- clinical applications of stem-cell research in neurobiology and hematology
Article Abstract:
The demonstration that some nerve cells can be re-programmed to be blood cells may revolutionize the treatment of both brain and blood diseases. In 1999, scientists reported that nerve stem cells could be grown in culture and could be turned into blood stem cells. Stem cells are the precursors of all cells but this is the first time stem cells from one type of tissue could be turned into stem cells of another type. It may be that there is an earlier precursor stem cell that can lead to both nerve cells and blood cells.
