The illusion of certainty
Article Abstract:
The case of a 42-year-old man with arterial occlusions in his legs illustrates the difficulty in making a proper diagnosis if the physician begins with certain assumptions. The man reported severe pain in his hips and legs when exercising but said the pain did not force him to stop. Therefore, his doctor ruled out arterial occlusive disease and only came back to this diagnosis when spinal X-rays showed no impingement of the spine on the spinal cord. Arteriography revealed an 80% to 90% occlusion of the aorta where it divides into the two iliac arteries, which provide blood to the legs. He was treated surgically but still has severe pain.

On the cards
Article Abstract:
There has been a great improvement in organ transplantation techniques over the last 10 years, and this has led to a strong rise in demand for donated organs. However, only around 26% of the adult population carry a donor card. Research has shown that many people would be willing for their organs to be used, but do not wish to deal with the emotions attached to carrying a donor card. In a number of other European countries, efforts are being made to overcome shortages of donated organs by operating an 'opting-out' system under which organs can be used without the permission of relatives unless the deceased had registered as a non-donor.
