The incidence of cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in Rochester, Minn, 1950 through 1969
Article Abstract:
Cholelithiasis is the formation or presence of gallstones in the gallbladder or common duct; the condition may or may not be associated with symptoms. The frequency of this disease has been examined mainly through autopsy studies. Research has shown that cholelithiasis occurred in 3 to 4 percent of Orientals; 40 percent of residents of Malmo, Sweden; and 48.6 percent of Pima Indians. The wide variation in prevalence of this disease may be related to differences in race, diet, age, socioeconomic factors, or methods of referral. Another study showed that gallbladder disease developed in 6.2 percent of men and 12.1 percent of women aged 45 to 69 years. The incidence of cholelithiasis and cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) in Rochester, Minnesota between 1950 and 1969 was assessed. During this period, cholelithiasis developed in 2,344 persons in Rochester, Minnesota. The average yearly incidence rates per 100,000 persons were 217 for men and 370 for women. The incidence of gallbladder disease increased with age, particularly in men. By age 70 years, the prevalence of cholelithiasis was higher in men than women. Progression of peripheral occlusive arterial disease in diabetes mellitus: What factors are predictive?
Article Abstract:
Peripheral occlusive arterial disease (POAD) occurs when atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, causes significant blockages in arteries, resulting in damage or compromise to organs and limbs, particularly the legs. POAD is a known complication of diabetes. Other factors associated with POAD of diabetic patients include obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, length of time the patient has been diabetic, presence of other diabetic complications, and high cholesterol. A study was done comparing normal patients, patients with POAD alone, patients with diabetes mellitus alone, and patients with both POAD and diabetes, to examine what factors would cause progression of POAD in diabetics. The factors found to be of significance included smoking, high blood pressure and previous evidence of POAD. Thus, efforts at encouraging smoking cessation and controlling high blood pressure should be helpful in slowing the progression of POAD in diabetics. Complications leading to surgery after breast implantation
Article Abstract:
A substantial percentage of women who receive a breast implant will develop a complication from the procedure. Researchers followed 749 women who received a breast implant. During an average follow-up of 7.8 years, 24% of the women developed a complication, including contracture of the capsule surrounding the implant, rupture of the implant, bleeding, infection, leakage and abnormal wound healing. Capsule contracture and implant rupture were the most common complications. Cosmetic implants had a lower complication rate than post-mastectomy implants.
