The incremental cost of screening, diagnosis, and treatment of gonorrhea and Chlamydia in a family planning clinic
Article Abstract:
A family planning clinic was studied to estimate all relevant incremental costs associated with the diagnosis and treatment of gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Units of service that were studied included screening, diagnostic treatment and test of cure activities and contact activities. The cost of screening was $9.74 on the average, while diagnostic tests provided to patients without appointments cost an average of $19.92 and treatment-related costs averaged $24.97 per visit. The total incremental cost (cost over and above other services provided) of providing screening, diagnosis, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases at the clinic amounted to 14 percent of the clinic's budget during the study period and is deemed to be potentially cost-effective.

Evaluation of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Screening Criteria
Article Abstract:
Women older than 29 years and heterosexual men probably have a low risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease and therefore do not need to be tested in any population-based screening technique. This was the conclusion of researchers who tested asymptomatic people visiting a health clinic for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Overall, 3% of the women tested positive for chlamydia and 1% tested positive for gonorrhea. Among men, these percentages were 4% and 1%, respectively.
