AMA backs county society's disciplinary action
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) will support the Dallas County Medical Society in a suit against it brought by a psychiatrist to whom it denied membership. The Society refused Sidney C. Brooks membership because of what it deemed his lack of response to patient complaints. The AMA pledged in 1991 to assist regional medical societies in such cases to encourage strong self-regulation of physicians. Brooks has never been disciplined or sued for malpractice and is licensed in several states.

New York mulls no-fault plan for impaired infants
Article Abstract:
New York State may adopt a program to remove the cases of neurologically impaired infants from the state's tort system. The New York State Impaired Newborn Compensation Program would set up an administrative system to pay for the lifetime care costs of such infants. Critics contend that the program would remove an important incentive for physicians to practice safe medicine. The states's trial lawyers oppose the plan, but medical groups are divided.
