The management of a faecal fistula
Article Abstract:
Treatment of intestinal fistulas must be undertaken using strict management techniques to ensure the risk of infection is kept to minimal levels. A faecal fistula should be regarded as an infected wound despite the discharge originating internally rather than from the wound. Treating a fistula often involves the use of filler paste to level out the wound, which can then be fitted with a skin barrier to reduce the risk of infection while assisting the healing process by keeping the wound free of moisture. Patients should be kept informed about any procedures to ensure they do not become too distressed.

Sickle cell disease and the carer-client relationship
Article Abstract:
Many health care professionals in the UK have only limited knowledge of sickle cell disease (SCD). In some cases, they regard patients with SCD very negatively. They know little about the management of sickle pain and the clinical pharmacology of narcotics for use by SCD patients. Indeed, poor pain management is a common area of conflict between SCD patients and carers. SCD patients must be taught how to deal with their pain, thus making them less likely to be hostile towards their carers, while health professionals must improve their knowledge of the management of SCD.
