Helping students find a place in the team
Article Abstract:
Student nurses in the UK were granted supernumerary status when the Project 2000 approach to training was introduced. This status has allowed educational establishments to be more flexible in how they organize practical experience placements for students, but has also brought some problems. There are reports of students failing to attend placements and refusing to undertake certain tasks because they have already been achieved at an earlier stage in the course. It is clear that students need to be integrated into the nursing team as early as possible, as the ability to be accepted on a nursing team is a key goal in nursing education.

The Tex-Mex leap
Article Abstract:
The Center for Hispanic/Latin American Studies in Nursing and Health at the University of Texas at Arlington has established a summer elective which allows student nurses to spend two weeks improving their familiarity with Mexican language and culture. The student nurses live with a Mexican family, they study Spanish medical terms and visit hospitals and primary health care facilities in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The elective is designed to allow the students to relate more effectively to Hispanic clients when they begin nursing in Texas, where in certain places up to 40% of nurses' clients are Hispanic.
