The midgestational rabbit as a model for the creation of membrane defects after needle fetoscopy
Article Abstract:
The pregnant rabbit might be suitable as an animal model of what happens to a fetus during and after fetoscopic procedures. These procedures are used to treat certain fetal diseases and involve puncturing the fetal membranes with a needle. Researchers used fetoscopic procedures on rabbits in the middle of their pregnancy. Following these procedures, the integrity of the fetal membranes was restored in only 46% to 76% of the rabbits, depending on the size of the needle. Fetuses with continuing membrane defects from the procedure were more likely to have stunted growth.

Fetal membrane closure techniques after hysteroamniotomy in the midgestational rabbit model
Article Abstract:
Sewing the uterus only appears to be the best way to close fetal membranes that rupture prematurely. This can sometimes occur after amniocentesis or prenatal surgery on the fetus. Researchers made an opening in the uterine wall and fetal membranes in 28 rabbits and tested the effectiveness of sewing the uterus only, uterus and membranes, using a collagen plug or fibrin glue. Sewing the uterus only restored membrane integrity most effectively, although fetal outcome was similar in all groups.

Gelatin sponge plug to seal fetoscopy port sites: technique in ovine and primate models
Article Abstract:
Gelatin sponges can be used to plug up holes in the uterus and fetal membranes after fetal surgery. The sponge is placed inside the surgical instrument and is kept in the hole by a plunger as the instrument is withdrawn. Surgeons sometimes operate on the fetus to correct certain abnormalities.
