The new OSHA: less visible, more effective
Article Abstract:
New OSHA policies are making OSHA more effective and less intrusive. A successful pilot program in Maine used letters to companies with poor workers' compensation records instead of OSHA enforcement and inspection. Now the Cooperative Compliance Program has been introduced in 20 additional states with 6 more to follow. OSHA is also resolving complaints via telephone and fax without threat of penalty. Employers who fix serious hazards immediately can receive penalty reductions, and OSHA is testing a program to eliminate penalties for employers with otherwise excellent records. OSHA is also including dental representatives in policy-making discussions.

Conference report
Article Abstract:
Researchers met in Cyprus in May of 1997 at an international conference on immunotherapy in rheumatic diseases, and discussed immune-modifying techniques to control chronic inflammatory conditions. Inflammatory cytokines, genetics, and infectious pathogens may contribute to autoimmune joint damage. Modification of processes which contribute to the migration of white blood cells to joint structures, alter immune function, or reduce cellular adhesion may be the basis of effective therapies. Modulation of immune processes may be superior to overall immune suppression.
