The value of preschool vision screening
Article Abstract:
Preschool vision screening in the UK, which involves a range of orthoptic tests, is designed to prevent or reduce disability caused by refractive errors, amblyopia and the types of squints that cannot be detected other than by screening. A review of the effectiveness of preschool vision screening indicates that the target conditions are frequently found. However, it was not possible to establish whether the target conditions lead to disability in childhood or in later life. Emphasis was placed on the fragile nature of the evidence on which preschool vision screening is based.

Effectiveness of child-health screening
Article Abstract:
Child-health surveillance focuses on the early identification of childhood disorders that could cause disability or handicap. Screening is often undertaken by health visitors using the infant distraction test (IDT), but this often fails to identify many hearing problems sufficiently early. Research suggests that screening tests applied in the first few days after birth can be more effective in identifying congenital hearing impairment.

Health visitors unprepared for hip screening
Article Abstract:
A survey into the knowledge possessed by health visitors on the subject of congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) has revealed that only 20 out of the 71 respondents felt that their diploma course prepared them adequately for CDH screening, while only four felt completely at ease with CDH screening. Around 70% of those questioned believed that the responsibility for screening should be shared.
