The nutrition transition in China: a cross-sectional analysis
Article Abstract:
The dietary structure and activity patterns of China was evaluated by analyzing data from the 1989 China Health and Nutrition Survey. Analysis of data revealed an imbalance in the nutritional patterns of the Chinese despite the increase in national food consumption. Obesity was prevalent on the higher income groups because of increased dietary fat. Regional discrepancies in body composition was also noted. Undernutrition is still a problem despite the emergence of a Western-style diet. Chinese nutritional planners should try to balance this discrepancy in their country's nutritional pattern.

Case management of kwashiorkor: an intervention project at seven nutrition rehabilitation centres in Malawi
Article Abstract:
A prospective study was conducted at seven Nutritional Rehabilitation Centres (NRC) in Malawi to evaluate a standardized case management scheme of kwashiorkor. The treatment protocol consisted of regular monitoring by pediatricians, tube-feeding and administration of Nutriset micronutrient supplement. The therapeutic strategy was found to be effective. Tube-feeding induced better weight gain without affecting mortality rate. Nutriset was found to improve weight gain aside from lowering death rate. While the results are promising, it was suggested that the protocol needs improvement.

Nutrition survey of the Hungarian population in a randomized trial between 1992-1994
Article Abstract:
The Hungarian Representative Nutrition Survey conducted between 1992 and 1994 shows that the Hungarian population contains several risk factors for diet related diseases. A high intake of protein, animal fat with high cholesterol content, and low intake of PUFA and carbohydrates were typical. Sodium intake was three to four times higher than the acceptable levels, while potassium and calcium intake was low. Women show a deficiency of iron and zinc. The incidence of overweight persons and obesity are 34.3% and 21.1%, respectively.
