An essential aspect of the nurse's role is to gain consent from their patients, ensuring that patients or their carers fully understand the procedure they are about to undergo and any associated risks, being able to give informed consent.

Poor performances can be described as practice that has fallen below accepted clinical and organizational standards. Nurses have a duty to report and manage poor performance issues whatever their level of skill and depth of experience, for the integrity of the profession and safety of the public.
